NZR Locomotive Shells for HO 1:87

Going some what off tangent in terms of scale, some New Zealand Locomotive Shells for HO were requested. The DC, DH, DI, DB, eeDF, DL, DXR & Ja converted to 1:87 scale so far. The intent is to print a shell & utilise chassis from donor locos or preferably buy a custom diesel chassis from North Yard Model Railway Parts (www.northyard.co.nz) at a reasonable price. The price for a shell will range from $60 - 200 & a chassis should set one back at least $150.
Currently the 1:87 market for NZR is catered for by the Frateschi Range, which from memory is limited to DA/DC/DX/DH in terms of Diesels
The models in 1:87 scale are only available in the Detail Plastics.
(Frosted Detail & Frosted Ultra Detail).
HO American dynamic brake details, grills , air hoses, couplers, handrails etc to finish off

  3. Hi, i want ask if it is possible to scale down the DXR with the new cab to 1:87 and put it on Shapeways? I found the one in 1:64 there but would need it in 1:87. Thanks a lot. with best regards, Andreas Goessner

  4. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind; the models interest me, and I was considering one as a complete 'what-if' for my personal layout:

What would be a suitable donor chassis for the Ab and Ja models?

Can the models take NEM couplings?

And do you have any plans for a J/Ja with a coal tender?

    1. Thanks for the comment, good question.
The models will take whatever couplers you put in em, the models are plastic so is easier to modify.
Yes I have plans to do the coal tender version.
The Ab is a pacific class, so 4-8-2 which is quite common, in 1:24 I use the bachman chassis https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=69_623&zenid=tmtbkicvos6li0ndokqsghhoa3

For 1:120 I would look for an N scale loco with similar wheel arrangement. Supply of these loco is rather limited in nz but ebay is usefull. Its a rather frustrating challenge.

The Ja class in 1:24 I would make a sideframe to take the wheels and motor from a bachmann chassis.
In 1:120 I would find buy a chassis for a 4-8-2 Light mountain class from here: https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=70&zenid=tmtbkicvos6li0ndokqsghhoa3

    2. Thanks for letting me know; my personal interest was to get a HO one, to convert to OO gauge for my WWII era, LNER themed layout- but it seems like no one is making HO-scale 4-8-2 locomotives anymore.
